Transport of Patient Samples
Regulating agencies (e.g., OSHA, Department of Transportation) require sample packaging to include the following:
Samples may be shipped at ambient temperature if allowed for the testing. Ambient temperature is the temperature of the surrounding air or environment.
- A leakproof primary receptacle (e.g., Collection tube)
- A secondary packaging which is also leakproof and contains a biohazard label (e.g., sealed plastic bag or other intermediate packaging)
- Absorbent material placed between the primary receptacle and secondary packaging
- Rigid outer packaging (e.g., corrugated cardboard, wood, metal, or plastic)
