Transport of Patient Samples
Regulating agencies (e.g., OSHA, Department of Transportation) require sample packaging to include the following:
  • A leakproof primary receptacle (e.g., Collection tube)
  • A secondary packaging which is also leakproof and contains a biohazard label (e.g., sealed plastic bag or other intermediate packaging)
  • Absorbent material placed between the primary receptacle and secondary packaging
  • Rigid outer packaging (e.g., corrugated cardboard, wood, metal, or plastic)
NOTE: State regulations must also be followed when shipping samples. If they are more stringent than federal shipping regulations, ensure they are followed.

Samples may be shipped at ambient temperature if allowed for the testing. Ambient temperature is the temperature of the surrounding air or environment.
